Molly Barker, a strongly dedicated advocate for serving the needs of adolescent girls, founded Girls on the Run. The organization was started in 1996, in Charlotte North Carolina, with the help of thirteen brave girls. Twenty-six girls came the next season and then seventy-five the following year.
In 2000, Girls on the Run International, a 501©3 organization, was born.
This unique program helps girls in the 3rd to 5th grade participate in a 10 to 12 week after-school running program that teaches young women to recognize their inner strengths. Throughout the season, the participants make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them special!
The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. They acquire important strategies and skills to help them to navigate through adult life.
Their motto says it all:
Learn – Dream – Live – Run
