On this day, July 17, 1902, 111 years ago, Willis Carrier invented modern air conditioning. He forever changed the world.
With the extreme heat pummeling the Northeast, millions of people are turning to the invention first developed 111 years ago by Dr. Willis Carrier. He founded Carrier which is now the world’s leader in high technology heating, air conditioning and refrigeration solutions. Invented in 1902 as an industrial problem solver, modern air conditioning has enabled countless industries to flourish, promoting the modern necessities the world relies on today and bringing comfort cooling and productivity to hospitals, schools, offices and homes.
On July 17, 1902, Dr. Carrier developed a design to control the humidity at a printing company in Brooklyn, N.Y. which enabled the paper used in the printing process to remain a constant size. Among the early industrial users of this cool innovation was the film industry. They used it to stabilize humidity and ultimately advance film-making by preventing the little white specks you see in the old classic movies from developing on the film reels.
The movie industry was changed forever in 1925 when Carrier cooled the Rivoli Theater in New York, transforming movie houses into a haven from the summer heat which vastly increased ticket sales during a traditionally slow season! The “summer blockbuster” had been born.
The convenience of air conditioning spread to homes in 1926 with Carrier’s introduction of the first home air conditioner, and since then the application of air conditioning has been wide spread. Today, 87 percent of U.S. homes have some form of air conditioning, and a 2012 study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has shown that this cooling technology can prove to be life-saving during summer heat waves.
Now you know why we are so proud to be a Carrier dealer and enjoy the rich-comfort heritage that this industry leader provides us all.
